    1982 (Top) Shock Nuts

    All,
Any idea why both front shocks have these additional lock nuts over the standard nuts?
These were noted during Flight Judging in August, but no deductions were taken.
The AIM only lists the insulator, washer, and one standard nut.

Car is an 82 with 835 miles and original shocks, so it's kind of a mystery.
    Thanks!

Are you absolutely sure the car has its original shocks? I realize that it has extremely low mileage and it would seem it would have the original shocks but have you checked them for part number and date?

I can tell you this: the shock retainers are not the ones specified by GM for the application. They are the type usually supplied with SERVICE shock absorbers.

The stamped steel lock nuts are exactly what you say---they are serving as lock nuts. They were not specified by GM for PRODUCTION use on this application. However, I have seen these supplied as part of the "hardware kit" included with SERVICE shocks.

      Joe,
Fair question. At the April 28 judging, chassis judge(s) wrote: 22025_ _ _ as a partial part number.
Apparently they couldn't see the entire p/n.
No date code was listed; no point deductions or notations regarding the attachment, either.
I am third owner; second owner (at 585 miles until I bought at 652) says he didn't change them, and I've no reason not to trust him.
Neither of us knew the original owner, so no real guarantees as to what happened with the car before Sept 2012.
