    Rag joint orientation

With the steering and tires pointing straight ahead does the the steering shaft flat side enter on the top or the bottom of the rag joint? Or does it matter? The aim looks like it is flat side up. Thanks

Top it has to allow space for the cap screw that tightens or clamps it onto the shaft.

With the steering wheel centered, the D Flat should be at 12 o'clock. This may or may not be true center but should be the high center. Now many of the aftermarket rags were copied wrong and the D-Flat is at 6 O'clock which will really screw up the steering- if attempts to use the rag are made.

        Re: Rag joint orientation

Gary,I have owned my car for 28 years, but I'm not sure if my rag joint has been replaced. I have the steering shaft out now and noticed it was not in the position shown in my aim. How can I be sure my rag joint is oem before I roll it 180*?

If you haven't replaced the rag joint in the past 28 years you most likely do not have a imported one. The imports started showing about 15 years ago. The D Flat on the input should be very close to 12 o'clock about 2 turns in. Now this is the box input not the steering column. The pinch bolts slide in the input groove and the side of the flat on the column. Center the box, slide on the rag and you will see the orientation for the column flange and pinch bolt.
