Question for the a/c R-12 enthusiasts

Could any one tell me the type of desiccant I could use in my A/C recycling machine? The desiccant bag sits in the suction oil separator which obsorbs moisture and oil gasses. Thanks Dutch

Original desiccant for R12 was UOP (Universal Oil Products) zeolite 4AXH-5 and/or 4AXH-6. The -5 was for automotive use and the -6 was for use in stationary refrigerant drying. The desiccant currently used for both R12 and R134a is UOP zeolite XH-7 and XH-9. The -7 is used primarily for use in automobiles and the -9 is for use in refrigerators and freezers, etc.

The manufacturer of your recovery system should have these available for sale. I would contact them.

My recycling machine is a 1995 snap-on act unit. I picked it up at a sale, it looks like it was never used, so I am in the process of getting it functional. I called snap-on and those guys have no idea what desiccant is required, they have desiccants but you have to buy a dryer in order to get the desiccants, I already have the dryer. What molecular sieve desiccant would be equivalent to xh7? It seems the only place to purchase xh7 is China.

        Harry:

I have no idea of any replacements for the zeolites I gave you above. If Snap-On Tools cannot help, you might try Classic Auto Air or Old Air Products and see if they will sell you some. They rebuild the receiver-driers for our old cars and replace the desiccants in this process.

These desiccants will pick-up moisture from the air, so they need to be handled in a zero moisture environment. They should all be in sealed containers.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Can you take a pic of the canister that houses the desiccant? If the canister has a flat plate with 6 or 8 bolts holding it on it might just be a standard Sporlan desiccant core. If it is some measurements would help. Type of desiccant shouldn't be an issue, all available commercial desiccant cores can be used R-12 and with most refrigerants available today.

An alternative would be to remove the desiccant all together and just use a Sporlan C-082 drier on the center hose on your gauges and discard it after use.

              Harry,

I had the same problem with a Snap On machine I purchased. I finally contacted the Original Air folks in Florida and purchased some of the desiccant bags they use when rebuilding R-12 dryers. Seems to work OK.

                Tom:

Excellent point. Parker or Sporian may well have something that will work and can be retrofitted. Harry needs to post up a pic and some dimensions. But as Michael also stated, the AC shops in Florida and Texas I mentioned above may also have what Harry needs.

                    Harry:

You should have an instruction manual that goes with your recovery system..........or you should be able to find and buy a used one on the internet. That may also have some info on exactly how best to proceed. But baring that, I would contact Classic Auto Air or Old Air Products regarding buying the zeolite from them.

Sorry I cannot be of much help.

Definitely not typical of commercial applications. I'll say I don't love the arrangement of the desiccant. A Sporlan C-082 is only about 18 bucks, I like passing 100% of the refrigerant through the drier. Hope you're able to get your machine running, have fun!!
