1969 Corvette Rear Compartment & Spare Tire Lock & Keys

1969 Experts - Is there any info on the use of "K" letter code keys & locks* instead of the "H" letter code keys for the rear compartment & spare tire locks on the late/very late production 1969 Corvettes. The 1969 Corvette we're dealing with does
have the typical "E" letter code keyway ignition & door locks.

*FYI - We have found mention on a Camaro website that late production vehicles & fleet vehicles could have used the next years,
1970, keyway locks & keys which would have been the "K" letter code locks & keys.

Any info on the use of 1970 "K" letter code locks & keys on the late/very late 1969 Corvettes is appreciated. Thanks, Pete

My original owner 1969 was built mid-September, 1969. As I recall, my rear compartment and spare tire key is an "H" code. However, I can't confirm as I'm 7,000 miles away right now.

      Pete,
Your question rang a bell with me. I own a very late production (Dec 15 1969) car. I first bought it in 1996 as a restored car that had already earned Gold at Bloomington. Looking through my notes on the car and flight judging sheets I found the rectangular key was coded E and the oval key was coded K. I sold the car in 2001 and bought it back in 2009. It now has H coded oval keys. I can not remember if I had the K code changed or if it was done during the 8 years I did not own the car. As I said the car was restored before I bought it in 1996 so I can not say for sure that it left the factory with the K coded keys.

        All,

I presume when Pete says late/very late production '69 Corvettes, he is referring to cars built, say, in July of 1969.

          Hi Pete,
My Nov 17th 1969 original glove box / spare tire lock key has the letter "H" on it.

Are you heading to Carlisle this year?

I would think he would be talking about December 1969 since 1969 production continued through then.

              Mike,

That what happens when I assume someone else doesn't know what they're talking about...

I didn't know that '69 production lasted until December of 1969. I learned something today. A good day it was.

Mike - Thanks for the info on 1969 Corvette production year. Based on this info, it would not surprise me if "K" letter code rear compartment &
spare tire lock keys ended up on some of these cars made then as the "J" & "K" letter code keys were used in 1970 production; but does anyone have any info/documentation on or example of the "K" letter code keys being used in 1969 Corvette production? Pete

Don - Thanks for the photo. Nice example of an original set of 1969 "E" & "H" letter code keys w/the key letters lying along the key shaft. Pete
