    Taps - name and source

I've seen - but do not have - a tap "sleeve" that opens in the middle and can be installed on good threads.....located ABOVE those threads where Bubba attempted to use the bolt as a punch to remove a 50 lb plug in a sewer main......or even something smaller. Need a proper name for such tool where a seller will know what I'm talking about and give me one for my birthday.....HELP!

Those are pretty slick. I might invest in a set.

The only thing holding the two haves together is the socket as there is no special tool to retain them.
            Better than nothing? Yes.
Especially if used with a factory recommended 6-point socket.
            Cure all, not quite.
I did manage to save a couple bumper bolts using this system.
However, they still started funny and I had to be careful not to start the bolt with force and confirm it picked up the correct lead.
If the bold can be removed and the dies held in a vise and the screw backed through the tap one can expect better results.

If I can get the screw or stud off and into my lathe I can chase the threads with better results. But this method is time consuming.
Don't forget the application of cutting oil for best results.

If the bolt can be removed, what's the need for the split die?

If bolt can be removed but starting threads are damaged you mount the die on the good threads and back it off. Hoping to rethread the damaged threads
