    67 427-400hp engine #s

    Guys, A friend brought his 1967 400hp car by my house to show it to me. He doesn't have the Tank sticker, nor does he have any Buyers order, window sticker, etc. So the first thing I went to was the engine pad, It is infact a JC engine code (400HP), BUT the engine I.D. number the numbers are facing the front of the car, the engine number the numbers are facing the rear of the car??? I immediately said, this throws up a red flag. Could it be someone stamped this engine pad, and put one number facing front and the other number facing rear?? I looked at my 427 435 and all the numbers face the forward end of the car. He feels it is just a mistake at the factory? I say something is very questionable??? Give me your thoughts.

    Don, its possible that the stamps can be inverted, if broaching looks good, casting number match up, and the digits look normal, than it likely real. a picture would help.

      Thanks Ed, You have a good point, I will ask him if he would allow me to post a picture. It sure looks like a real car/engine combo.

        Keep in mind that the stampings were done at different places. The engine code was done at Tonawanda; the VIN derivative at St. Louis. If the linesman at either location accidentally inverted the gang stamp, it would cause what you describe. For this kind of error, I highly doubt they would grind out the stamping and attempt to re-stamp.

          Don;

          Did it look something like this?

          This is a 67 Camaro Big Block engine pad, 396, 375hp.

          I am NOT attesting to the authenticity of this engine pad, although I would pass it with the noted anomaly.

          It happened, in this case it happened in the Los Angeles Camaro assembly plant sometime shortly (I assume) after Feb 22nd, 1967.
