Installing new ignition switch in 64 C2

I am replacing the ignition switch in my 64 C2. The new lock cylinder came with the key installed in the lock assembly. I can not get the key to come out of the lock assembly. The tumblers have a metal strip over them. Does this strip of metal need to be removed to free up the key? If not how do you get the key out?

Dan, I cannot say t have seen this before, but I think that the metal is holding it together so it does not come apart ,try removing the metal strip.

Move the key to the lock position and see if it will come out!

I thought the same as you. Pulled the plate off. Big mistake, it was holding the springs for the tumblers in. Springs shot every where. Key still won't come out. I will have to order an other lock.

Sort of makes me question the quality of the replacement part. I normally get my parts from Paragon but they won't sell the ignition lock assembly separately, you have to get the door locks as well.

The lock assembly is not installed into the switch assembly yet.

          Dan,

By any chance are you holding down the "sidebar' when you try to pull out the key? The sidebar has be able to move outward in order for the key to be removed.

The plate you removed is the retainer plate for the tumblers and tumbler springs. You do not want to remove that unless you want to change or replace the tumblers.

Daniel - The metal strip, i.e., the retainer, is staked in the lock cylinder & holds in the tumbler springs & the tumblers. Sometimes the key is difficult to remove from an new lock cylinder, but I've found the wiggling the key up & down while trying to remove it helps. Also, as Gary has mentioned be sure you are not holding the lock bar down. Pete
