The new TIM&JM for the 68-69 Corvette has come out and I have a question about the oil cap for the 427. It states that there is an "S" stamped on the rivet and says nothing about the SMC logo. Also the one they show as an example also does not appear to have the SMC logo. Is there an opinion on this as I know that there are discrepancy's in the manual.

I have yet to see a known original chrome 1969 or 1970 oil fill cap with the SMC logo on it. I am still looking.
I know that for years a reproduction chrome oil cap was available with both the S on the center rivet (poorly stamped I might add) and the SMC logo in the field.
There you have it. My opinion.Terry- Top

Re: 1969 Big Block Oil Cap
Terry;
You responded to my question sometime ago about the S and the SMC logo on an original oil cap from 1969. For the last 2 years my 1969 L89 has been at the restoration shop where is was being restored. This week they finished everything on the body so they untapped the engine compartment when I looked at the oil cap (which is original) I noticed it had the S and the SMC. Your thoughts.Attached Files- Top

I don't think this is an originally installed oil fill cap. However, I do not think it's a reproduction, either. It's simply a later SERVICE example of the original cap, GM #3851735, as manufactured by Stant. This cap may also have been used on later PRODUCTION L-82. It's also possible the cap is an aftermarket Stant cap which, for any given period, was the same as the GM cap.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
