My better half made a rare appearance in the garage this morning as I installed the antenna on the '70.
"Look, I just installed the antenna! Doesn't it look cool?" I was excited it was on the car again after a drawn out assembly process. (See other post- "How long has your car been apart?")
"Does it go up and down as you use the radio, or do you need to use a separate switch?" she asks.
"It's not a power antenna."
"Can you retract it to prevent vandalism?"
"No."
"Well, can you easily replace it if it's damaged?"
"It's easy to remove and install the mast. But finding an original would be hard."
"Can't you just put on a new one?"
"Yes. But the ball size of reproduction masts are a different."
"Does that mean the radio won't work properly?"
"No, it means the size of the ball isn't the same. A Corvette guy would notice." I felt a bit lame saying this out loud.
"You guys are crazy." She said as she turns around and goes into the house.
Maybe so, I thought. But I think it's cool the antenna is the same age as the car.
Even though this hobby sometimes drives me crazy, it's helped me remain curious and sane while living life. And since you're reading this, I suspect you too have an outlet to remain curious and sane.
Cheers to caring about the ball size of our antenna.
