    63 L76 Choke Tube Finish

What is the correct finish for the 63 340 L76 choke tube, natural or chrome? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Edward. My 63 July car is also chrome but the judging manual says it should be natural steel. This is why i posed the question. Anybody have an answer for this ? Is the JM wrong?

Winter Edition JG 1994, 2nd Edition: "The L76 tube is chrome plated.".
6th Edition, 2nd printing, changes to "...except the early L76 that is chrome plated...", pg 86.
L75/6 AIM, sheet 3 (dtd 11/23/62) shows "3825912 Pipe Assy" as L75 and "3834123 Pipe Assy" as L76. Must be some sort of difference.

Thanks Loren. Yes, i have 6th edition, 1st printing that states "The upper choke tube is natural steel on all, except the early 1963 L76 engines that is chrome plated, ...." So, i take this to mean that my late production (July) car should have a natural steel tube. Do you agree? Anyone else? However all the supply houses show a chrome tube for all L76 production. Thus my dilemma.

Re: 63 L76 Choke Tube Finish

Go back to the 6th Edition (mine is 2nd printing) for yet another question - on page 89, "Early '375' models may show variations....includes, but is not limited to, lack of chrome plating on
the front balance tubes, ...fuel lines, ...oil filler tube...". I agree with this lack of chrome plating on early FIs; I have a HARD time making it jibe with CHROME on early L76s and not late, so I guess I would NOT agree with natural steel on your car. Perhaps the JT can delineate where we went from ALL chrome to just EARLY chrome?

I agree and thank you for your insight. It appears that the JG is quite vague on the issue. I plan on keeping the chrome unless convinced otherwise.

Andy, I have seen many 63's and have yet to see a L-76 without the chrome choke tube, I am not sure about the way the current JM spells it out. I would agree with Loren may be early cars were Natural.

As far as I know all early production 63's used a non plated/plain choke pipe and plain brass fitting. I do not know the cutoff.

Re: 63 L76 Choke Tube Finish

If the car had fuel injection here is what is typical. The early '63's had a bare steel tube line. The later cars had a chrome one.

Andy. Since your car is July it would most definitely have a chrome choke tube. At least the FI cars in July would have a chrome tube.
Original tubes are magnetic. Chrome plated steel. Older repros were chrome plated stainless and that will give you a deduct. John

Thanks to all for your help. It appears that the JM is wrong and late L76 cars are chrome plated steel.
