    Re: vibration

They tried that at the my local tire shop. (leaving the safety hood up)
    It had an interlock.
Sometimes you can get a peak leaving the guard in place. If they have an older machine that might work. The machine used to trim "out of round" tires are usually older and they might be another option. The tire techs typically spin them by hand on the car, at least the front one. I have watched them find budges this way. They were astonishingly good at it.
If you have no luck identifying the issue most alignment shops are adept at this type of problem solving.

      Re: vibration

I sold thousands of tires in my shops over 40 years. And used all the new ''HI-TECH'' balancers of the day., The old HUNTER balancer that fits under the front tire was the best in the old days. The machine looked like a lawn mower size wise and you would put the car on the ''open'' style lift, and then drop it to about 6 inches off the floor. An independant hub attaced to the wheel bead, and had color coded rings in the center. You would spin the tire from the balancer motor at 30 mph and 60 mph selection speeds, then when the different speeds were reached, you would use the color ring to find the amount and point of wheel weight to apply. Each color would get you closer and closer to the ''exact'' amount of balance and location taking into consideration the wheel and tire, and Brake hub. When finished, we would rotate and the balance the rear tires as well.

DUKE is very correct, 58 MPH has the worst balance speed, and a static or modern spin balance should be done at that speed if you can find it. Ask the NASCAR guys how they balance their tires. The GOODYEAR RACE GUYS have many years at this. My time was 1966-94 era. After that time, I did car wash, and smog check......and that was not as rewarding as the old shop days fixing real cars.

Make sure the weights have not come off the brake drum. Back in the day of balancing tires on the car these weights got knocked off because some aftermarket mags would hit the weight. You can balance the tire off the car all you want but if the drum isn't balanced you will get a vibration!

The HUNTER Balancer that James wrote about would account for missing drum weights as the balance is preformed on the car.

              Re: vibration

The best method that I have seen today is the Hunter Road Force. I buy my tires from a dealer that has the conventional Hunter balance machine. I run the tires 100 miles or so and take them to another shop that has the Road Force balancer. Day and night difference.

I agree with Jim, the old Hunter Tune In Balancer, that looked like a push mower did one heck of a job.
