just how many wires attach to positive battery cable post at starter? I am in the process of replacing the starter and I think I have black and red attached together and then a black wire that was also attached, which I was thinking ground?? car has no other options. this cars wiring has been altered at one time, it has no fuse links. is it suppose to?

    Edward,

Study the wiring diagram located in the AIM or service manual. If you have wires of the same color you will need to identify where they go. Not good to attach a "ground" wire to the battery cable post...…on the solenoid.
Per the AIM wiring you should have a #20 OR and a #14 BRN as well as the positive battery cable attached to the large lug on the solenoid. The #20 & #14 are both fusible links...… if you have original wiring...….
There is also a #18 pink connected to pole "R" and a #12 purple connected to pole "S"
There is also a #14 black from the heater blower (ground) attached with the brown negative battery cable at the starter motor mounting bolt where it attaches to the engine block.

The solid black wire and sometimes with a white tracer with the large ring attaches to the starter mounting bolt. It is the ground for the fan blower and the WW pump. If you attach it to the solenoid where the red ignition wire attaches your battery will drain over a few days time and you'll be scratching your head and wondering (what happened). Has happened hundreds of times right here on the forum.
