    1970 LT-1 Radiator shroud

A friend has asked me if the correct radiator shroud is metal or fiberglass for a 1970 LT-1. ? His shroud is missing a bottom piece? I found one on eBay, but I don't know. The only LT-1 I have owned was in a 71 CAMARO.

Well mine certainly isn't metal, and I surely wouldn't describe it as fiberglass. Something between plastic and rubber, ie it is flexible.

Be sure you get the correct one. The big block one is different.
The one he needs is available in reproduction:

            Jim,

I hope you are doing well. Just to add my two cents, the original shroud for that application was definitely a plastic and it should have a bottom piece as well. - Ron

If I recall correctly the only LT-1 with metal shroud was the ZR-1, but it had aluminum radiator.

                Re: 1970 LT-1 Radiator shroud

Hi James, the radiator shroud you posted a link to is for a brass radiator car I believe. See pic attached of T. Flanagan's NCRS 5 Star Bowtie '70 ZR1. The non-ZR1 RPO LT1 used a hardened plastic shroud. Photo also attached. What you describe is correct. There is a main shroud + a crescent shape extension. The GM # is 3956109 but be aware, the OEM units have a diamond shape below the #. Reproductions often do not. See photos of my original shroud in my Grenning certified '70 LT1 convert.

                Regards,
                Dan

My 70 LT-1 has the plastic one. I'll check on the diamond shape and the extra piece at the bottom.

Here's what mine looks like. There is the diamond, but I don't think you'll see it in the photo.

                      Ed-----

Waterpump and fan clutch are non-original and not as originally configured. Radiator overflow hose is missing. As far as originality goes, I'd be a lot more concerned about those things than "diamonds" on the fan shroud.

My '70 LT-1 had the marking under the part number and the bottom piece. Attached are the pictures.

I bought this car in ’76. I knew what it was. I didn't 'put it away', I drove it. Cross country, Canada, had fun. Bought a new waterpump. Bought a new alternator. Bought a new starter motor. It’s what one did back then. Egads, the Ujoints I’m certain are not correct. The carburetor is not correct. And yes, the alternator is on the wrong side of the bracket! (thought I should point that out) It also, horror of horrors, has ’69 only side pipes! I don’t know why the overflow tube is not present – it’s on the list of things I need to resolve. It also doesn’t have a portion of the original windshield frame as that needed to be replaced. I had first date with my wife in this car. We came home from wedding in this car. I do not hold it to be representative of a NCRS standard – I was merely attempting to resolve what the 1970 LT-1 radiator shroud looked like.

I’ve kept this car 42 years. It’s a blast to drive, and that’s what I’m doing.
