Reason for studs in LS6 heads?

What is the reason for/purpose/function of studs in the 1971 LS6 heads that extend down into the valley of the block? See picture that was taken back in the early 1980's.

    Mike------

The GM casting #3946074 cylinder heads have tappings for 4 extra cylinder head bolts/studs (2 per head). However, these positions were used only for ZL-1 aluminum block engines. These blocks had 4 bosses in the lifter valley. The bosses were drilled for the studs. Cast iron blocks did not have the bosses. Curiously, GM did specify these same studs, GM #3946079, for 1971 LS-6 applications. I have no idea why, though. As I say, cast iron blocks did not have the drilled bosses so the studs, as far as I can tell, would be quite superfluous.
