    1963 tire carrier (bottom half to lild fitment)

    Is this spare tire tub and lid correct for my 63?
    If it is and I suspect it's correct. Why doesn't the lid fit any better than it does?
    Both the tube and cover have the same fiberglass finish which i recognize as 1963 parts.
    The tube is upside down on the floor with the lid on top.
    Notice the fitment. The lid almost falls into the tub. It is much smaller.
    Is this correct?
    Thanks

    I also found this crayon marking on the cover;

    Did GM put a job number on the covers?

    That is certainly a 63 Tub and Cover. The 63 and all C-2 covers don't fit snug at all. There are several threads at the bottom of this thread with pictures. Revue these and those should answer your questions.
    As for the numbers I have never seen numbers on the cover before but GM marked a lot of things with yellow ink.

      Thanks Ray;
      I should have done a search first.
      I looked at the other posted pictures that show the carrier lid fit, is terrible on the 63's.
      Not something one notices on the car.
      Just seems very odd GM wouldn't made the fit a little better. Well much better.
      Engineering minds usually over build stuff. The designer must have been a GM veteran.

      My lid was missing one rivet. So instead of waiting for an order I made one.

      Didn't take long. rivets are $1.50 for a set or 6. But I had one built on site.
      The head on the factory rivets is .050 thousands larger than 1/2 inch.
      I am just guessing the replacements are .5 inches. Home made rivets head is an exact match.
      And no paint on the rivets!

        In 63 there were two designs for the tire tubs an early and late design the lip was different so you may want to check and make sure you have the correct tub for your build date.

          The tub and lid had paint over-spray on them that matched the repaints from 50 plus years ago.
          If the tub was messed with (sure could have been) it would have been in the first five years or pre- 1967.
          Thus I am fairly confident it is correct for the build date (Dec 1962) but I have been wrong before.

          For some silly reason my car was painted twice before 1967. No accident history, that I could find, that would explain it.
          Seems they just wanted a different color! I know the car's history for 50 years but nothing before 1967 except reverse engineering what I have found. Every car has a stored history if you look close and know the original configuration.
