    C2 windshield washer pump repair

I can't get the diaphragm (bellows) out of the windshield washer pump. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have pushed, turned clockwise and counterclockwise, and pulled with no success. I have turned it by both small and large increments. Do I risk damaging anything if I leave the old one in? I used a piece of dowel to help push the diaphragm I drive the car so I do want the washers to work.
The pump will not hold its prime.

    Thank you,

    Randy

Randy, there was a thread on this in the past 3 months. It's there but I just can't locate it.

I had the same issue. You need to take the cover off. The one with 3 screws and the hole in it.
Manipulate the plunger in the forward most position then you will be able to rotate and get the old
diaphram off. Otherwise you will never get off trust me.

        Randy,
Here's a thread from some years ago on my 67, with the same issue:

          Randy,

Here's an update on the washer post:

Here's some photos taken in 2004:

The problem I had was with the check valve and the little rubble seals.

            Thank you for the info.
I assume that the washer pump assembly should be removed from the vehicle and that the wiper motor assembly can stay in place?

Usually the little rubber valves have turned to concrete. Buying a kit from LI Corvette and either using like it comes or just replacing the valves in your old housing (old colored one) will fix your problem. If not send it out for restoration.

Yes, but you have to be very careful in putting the washer pump back on the wiper motor assembly. The motor assembly driving pin needs to be in the slot on the pump assembly, or things will be ruined.

I just replaced the diaphragm only, with the motor/pump still on the car. Prime the lines with distilled water. Works just fine.

Another question for this thread....my washer stopped working yesterday.....just in time for the Regional in Massachusetts!! I took the valve off and tried feeling if the pump is being actuated and nothing. I then replaced it with a white one, tried priming the pump with water being forced into the inlet hose, nothing! Is my best bet, taking the pump off and see what's going on or is there another test I can run before I take the pump off the wiper???

                      Thanks

Try forcing a little water into both the inlet hose and both outlet hoses.

I did that with a mouth full of water...no success...

                          Thanks

                            Gerald,

Check the switch as well, it may not be providing the ground path for the pump.

If the wipers still operate, disconnect the washer pump connector (the two wire connector) and run jumper wires from the battery to the pump. Run the +12v from the battery terminal and a ground wire to ant ground point that is handy. It doen't matter to the pump which terminal on the pump gets the +12 or the ground, but the wipers do need to be running for the pump to operate. If the pump doesn't work, it the pump, if it does work its the switch.
I've had the bad switch issue myself.
