    '67 brake caliper set

After 30 yrs it's time for me to replace all four calipers, pads and perhaps rubber hoses as well as fresh fluid on my '67 B/B roadster. I know there are many vendors claiming their product is the best but who do I believe? I would like to hear from those of you who have done this job recently. My aim is to not have to do it again so price isn't top priority but rather quality and good service from the vendor. I look forward to your recommendations and thank you for the advice.

I recently purchased O-Ring SS sleeved calipers from CSSB. They've been building calipers for over 30 years and have everything you want. Their customer service is second to none. http://www.cssbinc.com/corvette-brak...ers-parts.aspx

If yours are correct castings, most places will redo yours.
You will also have to ask for them to be painted black, as many otherwise paint them silver.

If yours are not the correct castings, most places will let you swap for the correct ones for a small fee.

I've used Vette Brakes in Florida several times with good results. They will do the usual lip seal, or an O-ring seal.

        Richard:

In my opinion, there are only 2 places to contact for your brake system rebuild:

        1. CSSB, Inc in Florida

        2. Lone Star Brake in Texas

Both great places and will give you what you want. But you need to decide what is best for you: rebuilding yours vs buying from stock, lip seal vs o-ring, etc.

My entire 1967 brake system came from DR VETTE, which is now part of CSSB, Inc. They provided all the hardware and rubber hoses, TBW lines, SS sleeved original master cylinder, and SS sleeved correct production codes brake calipers. Lifetime warranty and great to deal with. I used lip seals on the calipers.

Lone Star is a premium rebuilder and custom manufacturer that does rebuilds for other companies. But the owner Ken has special relationship with us Corvette guys and will pretty much do what we ask. I would trust them without question. They now advertise as wholesale, but will still deal with the individual Corvette customer.

If you want NCRS quality, tell them...........as well as what you want the finished product to be. Many folks are now using o-rings and like them, so that is an option over original lip seals.

But both companies will also require DOT 3/4 fluid to keep the warranty.

Thanks fellas, CSSB looks like the one to me. In the next day or two I'll jack up the car, pull off the wheels and make sure I order everything I need. Other than bleeding them, it should be kinda fun.

FYI, if yours were previously sleeved, then they likely just need cleaning and new seals.
I did a set of front calipers this weekend, and used new Raybestos seals from RockAuto.

However, if your pistons are pitted and need to be replaced then it's more cost and time effective to have them done by someone else. Thankfully the pistons in these calipers looked very good.

Pistons that are actually reusable are rare. If you inspect a piston, the most important area is the "ring" which forms the major diameter. If the hard anodize (the "goldish" color) on this surface is worn through, the piston needs to be replaced. So far, I've never seen a used piston which was OK in this regard.

These had silicone fluid since Day 1, and the car sat inside. I was pleasantly surprised at how good they looked.

                      Ric,

I have used Lone Star for the last 20 years and have never had a problem. I have purchased probably a hundred set of calipers with no problems along with thousands of dollars of other stuff and the service cannot be beat. They supply a large number of the Corvette Supply houses with calipers and other brake parts. Probably over half of the NCRS members have Lone Star Calipers on their Corvettes even though they don't know it.
O'Reiley's based in LR use their brake parts and sell them under their label. Common in the industry.

                      Nuff said!

                        Re: '67 brake caliper set

Just got done completely overhauling my '67 brakes. Went with CSSB for caliper seals and master cylinder rebuild kit with piston, seals and tube seats (honed the master cylinder). Replaced all lines steel and rubber as well as distribution blocks, rebuilt the distribution block/switch (I don't recommend taking it apart. I did but didn't need to) and went with Powerstop original style rotors and ceramic pads from Rock Auto. If I had it to do over, I would go with CSSB for rotors and pads (Rock Auto price was lower but the price wound up about the same after shipping).
My calipers were replaced at one time, and were all sleeved. I just rebuilt them with new lip seals and as was mentioned in another post, replaced the front pistons because of pitting. The rear pistons were in good condition. I did replace all springs. If I were doing it over, I would have spent more and gone with rebuilt number correct calipers. I only had the right front that had correct numbers (the JG has the inboard and outboard caliper halve numbers backwards on the right front, by the way). I went with ATE 706202 original TYP 200 Dot 4 brake fluid. Replacing the rotors is another story along with parking brakes.
All of the suggestions I saw are good.
                        Good luck,

                        Steve
