1969 Corvette Roadster at the Petersen Automotive Museum

Fellow members, most of the "Technical Discussions" were done during the restoration so I'm not offering anything specifically technical here. Nonetheless, I wanted to post that my 1969 Corvette Roadster is on loan displayed at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, CA. The theme for the exhibit is actually a "Japanese Perspectives" exhibition, which opened to the public today, May 26, 2018. They are exhibiting Japanese cars decades back and then they have opposing American cars of the same or similar years opposite the respective Japanese cars. For example, the car displayed across from my 1969 Corvette convertible is a 1969 Datsun 1600. This exhibit will run for 11 months. If you are ever near LA it is a wonderful museum to visit.

Very nice, great honor for your car. I used to visit Petersen frequently when in the area, but the displays lately seem to feature more foreign cars and less American ones. This should be quite a perspective, as the Japanese cars from the '60s were pretty much awful in all ways.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing when I read the OPs post. Kudos to you for being selected.

I met Jack at the private reception and preview of the new "Roots of Monozukuri" display last Thursday evening. (It opened to the public, today.) Under the LED (probably 6000K color temperature) lights you can really analyze paint, and the first thing I knew immediately was that his car's paint wasn't a clear coat job. In fact, it looked like lacquer to me, and not only is it acrylic lacquer, but John painted it himself!!! It's really a beautiful job.

His '69 is a nicely configured L-46/ four-speed with AC, PB, and PS.

So what was I doing at this event? My Cosworth Vega #2110 (an early '76 model) is on display across the aisle from Jack's Corvette.

Another question might be what are these two American cars doing in the display. Petersen Chief Historian Leslie Kendall wanted to include some Japanese "customs", "tuner cars", and "factory specials" alongside equivalent American cars. Across the aisle from my "factory special" is a Mazda Luce - a Japan-only FWD rotary engine hardtop coupe, and I think the car nose to nose with Jack's Corvette is a Datsun 2000.

I think Leslie has some affection for the Cosworth Vega. I talked to him about 20 years ago when I was California Regional Director for the Cosworth Vega Owners' Association about loaning my CV for a display, but I guess that idea fell through. In April he contacted the current RD who lives in Northern California, and Bryan immediately called me. I guess we'll have to wait for Jack to tell us how he got the invitation. It's a real honor for both of us and our cars to be at The Petersen.

I was really worried about the paint on my car. It's mostly the original shi...ty Lordstown acrylic lacquer job with dealer warranty paint, which may have even made it worse and a poorly painted roof by the shop that installed the Hollandia sliding steel sunroof back in '77. Leslie assured me that "they are only original once" knowing that the car has about 72,000 miles with 5000-8000 of those hot lapping Riverside and Willow Springs, so it's got plenty of "track rash" in addition to the normal road rash from bonsai runs down Mulholland and the various Malibu canyons and up to Monterey and back on back roads and Highway 1 along the coast. There's more about all this "abuse" at:

In addition to the sometimes weird little Japanese cars from the early post war period (and maybe a few prewar cars) there is a Nissan Group 7 car with a 5.9L V-12 that was only raced in Japan... never brought over to the USA for any Can-Am races. One Toyota 2000 GT Coupe is on display along with one of the two 2000 GT convertibles that was used in a James Bond film and are the only two extant; and some like the Honda 600 might bring back memories. I had a friend back in the day who owned one, and one Memorial Day weekend, on a whim, four of us piled into it well after sundown and headed for The (Colorado) River for the holiday weekend. John was about 6-4, his GF about 5-11 and my GF was about 5-10!

Both cars are on the third floor at the top of the stairs. You can't miss 'em. More info at:

Thank you for the kind words on my car Duke. I enjoyed reading your linked article as well. I remember the CVs from "back in the day" but had not seen one in quite some time so seeing Dukes was a fun trip down memory lane for me.

Apparently there was a 68 convertible scheduled for display that fell through for whatever reason. Chief Historian Leslie Kendall contacted Allen Morris with the Southern California Chapter that I belong to and asked if he knew anyone with an original 68-69 Corvette convertible nice enough to display. Allen called me, gave me an overview of the exhibit and told me that he had informed Leslie about my car. Allen is an active long time member who has participated in judging my car in the past so he knew the car well and recommended me to Leslie. Thank You Allen for thinking of me, it really is an honor to have the opportunity to display a car at the Petersen Museum. I called Leslie and send him a couple pics of the car and we formalized the paperwork and agreed on when the car had to be there to be placed in time for the opening of the exhibit.

Regarding being without the car for 11 months, the time will fly by I'm sure. Although it is a real fun car to drive (yes, I do drive it frequently) I am actually working on a frame off 70 LT-1 coupe and with the chassis done and the body on a body dolly it is helpful to have the extra garage space for the time being.
