63 bumper bolts - headmark confustion

A couple of years ago (because I had the spare tire tub down anyway) I ordered the rear (correct ?) bumper bolt kit from LICS - the bolts have "TR" headmarks. I'm now attempting to get rid of some 'hardware store' bolts on the front bumpers and ordered the LICS front (correct ?) bumper bolt kit.

The only headmarks in the kit's bolts are "WB" and "M" -- no "TR".....should there be some ? If so, how many (I have a few I can clean up) and where ?

Finally, if I have "TR" in the rear bumper and only "WB" and "M" up front is this a judging "hit" ?

    A bit confused....

I purchased and installed the same kit. It didn't match my original bolts. A couple of mine were broken and required replacing. When I had them re-plated I got the finishes reversed so I used the kit. I to am interested in what the judges have to say.

Exactly -- the LICS web site says their front kits ONLY have the "WB" and "M" headmarks now - NO others....

Remember that many manufactures supplied nuts/bolts & common small parts. As long as the head markings are period correct you should be OK, I have original bolts TR and WB. Now the bumper bolts for 63 I believe are 5/8 heads, think they changed for 67. You need to search for past discussions on these. Also believe repro's and over the counter are only in larger head size.

Finally the wrong head size should not cost you a deduct (judge may call you attention to it) but the number of items to judge under the bumper makes the wrong head size minor.

I think Alan is correct, the only thing with the repro's are the nuts are a 11/16" head the nuts were originally 5/8" heads. I believe the only exception was the four front lower brace on the front bumper which are WB the which ware black phosphate bolts and nuts. also the spacers in the kit is zinc, it should be blk. phosphate.

Think the bumper bolts for 63 are a mix of TR and WB with the nuts from 63-67 being 5/8". Here's a pic of several that I had made and plated. Have hundreds and have never marketed them. One Dollar each plus shipping. Will put them on the for sale at this website.

My March 63 has WB's on the front and TR's on the rear. I don't remember the logo on the two long ones in the front. John

                JR,

The 5/8" across the flats (ATFs) bumper nuts in zinc were only used thru Dec of '66, or a bit into Jan of '67. After that, all the bumper nuts were 11/16" ATFs in black phosphate, with the same part number in the AIM as the four 11/16" nuts at the large, center, front bumper brackets on '63-'66. The change-over to using just the 11/16" nuts was supposed to happen at the start of the '67 model year, according to the AIM, but that evidently didn't happen until inventory of the 5/8" nuts was used up. My observations are based on having looked at quite a few unmolested '67s built during Sep-Dec/Jan to know.

Have an original 67 and it's a 17,XXX with 5/8" nuts. Things in the AIM did not happen in an instant. As you say the St. Louis people used what was in the box and if some 11/16" were dumped in they used the 5/8" when they came to the bottom.
Any who! I have real 5/8" available.

                    JR,

Very interesting. I've never seen a '67 built after January that had the 5/8" bumper nuts. I believe they are original, since the 5/8" nuts are hard to find.
