    1963 Rear Body Mount Access Plate Screws / informational only.

    As informational only I am posting the screw/fastener I found on the Rear Body Mount Access Plate covers on my 1963.
    The head takes a 5/16 socket. The head says SEMS on it. Application takes 8 screws four on each cover.
    They also have a captive star washer (external style) on them.

    Thanks Richard for that information.
    On a related matter I need to change the body mounting bolts from underneath on a finished car. I want to be sure that the body nuts are captive so I can make the change without removing the carpet and cover. Any help is appreciated.

      Dave, they are captive nuts just spray with penetrate a few times and let set up for a night or two.If they have never been out the rust can cause the caged nut to break away, especially the ones behind rear wheels. One other thing the bolts at firewall is a nut and bolt.

        Don' t forget the two bolts that go from the top down. (They are next to the seat belt attachment points)
        Corner of the carpeting has to be lifted. These have the rubber mounting briskets.

          LIC lists this for these bolts;
          Access Plate Screw With Att Ext Lw (8)

          I take that to mean they have (external tooth lock washers) which is correct.

          Difficult to tell from the picture but the best I can tell the heads are marked E?
          It appears the ones that are sold for this application are not marked the same as the ones I found on my 63.

            Rich, Sems is what I have seen, not to say there were not others. the 64's I have seen did not have the star washers on the heads. It may be possible earlier64 cars could have had them.

              My April 65 car has all "SEMS" screws while my May 65 car has a combination of "SEMS" screws and screws with no identification but otherwise identical to the others and ALL had external lock washers. Both cars had never had those screws removed prior to me removing them. With all the different suppliers GM used, it's almost impossible to definitively state that a particular bolt/screw was the only one used in any application. On my April car, all the bumper bolts on one side are "M" bolts and all the ones on the side side are "TR". There were no less than 5 different suppliers of those bolts.

                Jim, that's good I always thought the star washers ended in 64.
