Best method to recess the fiberglass for hood emblem installation.

I just drilled the needed holes for the crossed flag emblem on the front of my 63.
What an experience as one has no room for error on the bottom hole and little on the top two.
I got them drilled and now the emblem will not set flat on the body.

Seems there was some type of dimple in the glass that was either not there on the replacement panel or was filled in during the paint job. Any ideas on how to go about attaching the emblem.
I am making the assumption the emblem is correct.
    Thanks
    Rick

The 63 surround has two small fiberglass 'cups' - about the size of an inverted sewing thimble that the emblem's rear most studs reside in....

Thanks so much, that was the exact confirmation I was looking for before I buried a drill into my new paint job!
      Appreciated the picture very much.

It is attached and setting flat. Thanks as without this Frank's input this would have driven me nuts attempting to figure it out.
Below are some pictures of the final installation.

Just crazy drilling a hole this big in new paint.
Yes it should have been fitted before the paint, but is wasn't.
It worked out and that ill have to be good enough.

Most likely a replacement surround.....I know for a fact that the later SMC hood surrounds do not have the "cups" for 63 that are required for the rearmost nose emblem studs...

Very nicely done BTW...that had to have been a nerve-wracking job!

An easier and less stressful solution is to simply use a Dremel tool and remove the offending portion of the stud on the emblem so it sits flush. Done it on several cars without the risk of hurting fresh paint. It's much easier and safer to make the stud smaller than to make the hole bigger.

Just found this extremely helpful post as I am experiencing the same problem. I think it may be due to a replacement surround but not sure. Car has not been painted so that is a plus.

                Thanks!

A good reminder why it's good practice to trial fit all trim before painting.
I didn't trial fit the fender gills on a '70 ("what could be different?"), and it bit me.
