    1954 fuel pump oil leak

Fuel pump is a couple of years old but only a couple of hundred miles. I noticed motor oil on the outside of the pump which I promptly cleaned off. Took the car for a 20 mile drive and when I returned there was motor oil on the double action fuel pump again. Is the oil an indication of a defective pump requiring replacement or rebuild?

That is possible. Or the mounting gasket could be bad.

Take one of the vacuum fittings off and see if oil comes out. If it does there is oil in the pump outside of the vacuum diaphragm. If no oil there then the oil is between the diaphragms which is ok. The area between the diaphragms is open to the engine block as the lever arm in that area has to extend into the block and contact the cam to operate. And, as I recall, you will notice two little holes in the pump casing in the center section near the AC logo. They are probably the path out for the oil. You can always plug those holes with a toothpick as I don't know what purpose they serve.

Disconnected both vacuum lines and no oil obvious. I even took a air hose and lightly blew into holes to see if I could get some residual oil. I am just confirming that that is the only test to see if fuel pump is defective. Tomorrow I will plug the holes. There are actually two small ones and one larger one. Is it OK to plug all of them. I wonder what they were put there for in the first place?

You could do the same thing on the fuel side of the other diaphragm but that is messy and an easier check is to look at the fuel filter for signs of oil in the fuel.

I'm guessing the holes let air in an out as the back side of both diaphragms are pumping air. But since the back side of the fuel pump is open to the inside of the engine I would think you would not end up with a problem. Any air pressure should be able to relieve in that direction. But if your fuel pump blow up don't blame me...ha.

Temporarily block the holes and see if your oil issue goes away. Stuff the whole cavity with a chunk of putty or clay? If the leak is elsewhere open them again.
