Cliff being no 1 but sometimes you have to wait. Also you will need to be specific with any builder as to what you expect for the end result. You want it 100% stock correct for judging etc. Is the engine stock? If not they will need specifics such as heads, cam, rear gear upgrades etc. Some offer a full tune performed on a running engine before it ships to you.Last edited by David M.; April 28, 2018, 11:25 PM.- Top

Re: 1972 Q-jet rebuild recommendation please
Stephen,
I highly recommend using Custom Rebuilt Carburetor in New Jersey. The person you want to ask for is Phil Cancilla who is the owner. Not only do they do a great job rebuilding the unit, but they do an outstanding job of re-plating it to the way it was when it was new. Not cheap, but very reliable and trust worthy. Phil's reach number is: (732) 356 - 4333. - Ron"SOLID LIFTERS MATTER"- Top

Re: 1972 Q-jet rebuild recommendation please
Patrick, I have to say that was not my experience at all. I was very clear with my instructions as to what I was expecting, and I must say I was not disappointed. In fact I insisted that he perform the rebuild and oversee the plating process. I can't speak for anyone else's experience, but I am probably as anal as they come. I recorded every number and date along with pics from every angle. I sent you a couple of pictures and you seemed that you liked it. Again, I am sorry to hear if someone had a negative experience, but maybe it was because I policed it. I got all my original hardware and parts back. - Ron"SOLID LIFTERS MATTER"- Top

I specifically talked to Phil and requested the same. I even sent it in writing with the carb. Is that what I got? Nope, and when I contacted him he didn't care. As a result, in the past several years I have not recommended him once, and won't.

Re: 1972 Q-jet rebuild recommendation please
Just restore the carb yourself there are plenty of you tubes and information out there. It’s not rocket science. The entire premise of NCRS is working on these cars, as the “R” is for restoration.- Top

Re: 1972 Q-jet rebuild recommendation please
Basic disassembly, cleaning, installation of a new kit isn't hard and may be all that's needed for a solid carburetor.
But these carbs are getting old. Many have been through commercial rebuilders, subjected to misguided mods, are warped, have stripped threads or worn out throttle bushings.
For example, Cliff Ruggles rescued a Q-Jet I acquired on eBay which had a butchered idle bypass. Someone had epoxied the passages in the main body closed, enlarged the metering holes in the throttle body, and installed different sized idle tubes. Identifying these as the reasons why the engine wouldn't idle and knowing how to correct them takes more experience than many of us have with these carbs.Mark Edmondson

Re: 1972 Q-jet rebuild recommendation please
Chris at Chris's carb shop in Dayton Ohio has done several for me including Quadrajets, Carter AFB's and Holley's. He is a smaller carb shop and does the work himself. He runs all carbs on a test motor and will do whatever you want from rebuilds to full carb restoration. Great guy. My last rebuild took 2 1/2 weeks from start to finish. I would recommend him to anyone. Google him for his contact information.- Top
