    64 Gas tank Cover

I need to change the plastic filler on gas door. Have a new one but original is riveted in. How is the best way to remove and replace?

You would have to drill out the rivets the real question is how do you replace the rivets. I don't know that anyone has figured out a good way to do that.

I think about the only was to secure would be a very small and short self tapping screw.

I restored my '64 gas door that way, drill out rivets and used small self tapping screws.

I would not believe that would pass judging. If they are going to find hair line cracks in the plastic they will find the screws.

They will pick it up in the judging

Richard Fortier has a process to drill the rivets, install drive pins and then machine the heads to resemble the rolled studs as original. My car has been judged chapter and regional with no deduct. The heads are steel so they need to be waxed so as not to rust. Not cheap but I'm happy with it. He has a two page fastener ad in the DriveLine

Why don't you just purchase a complete gas lid door for Trim Parts or any big box Corvette Warehouse? You put in a repo emblem and it will loose points anyway!

Give Joe Randolph (37610) a try, he usually does 67 doors but same method needs to be used.

I have seen pictures of Joe's work and think it looks great. I also think he is cheaper than Fortier. The only question is whether he will take on the job. If he will then I'd do that.
