removing center sunburst section of '67 aluminum wheels

What's best method or removing center from '67 aluminum wheel to get to lug nuts? I've been told to put a screwdriver blade into a slot closest to clips and prize outward using rim as fulcrum for screwdriver with rag between screwdriver handle and rim for protection, going around center section. Correct? Been trying this and can only get one side loose, maybe my screwdriver handle isn't long enough for enough force.
    thanks

Are these factory original wheels (Kelsey Hayes)? The reason I ask, is some of the aftermarket wheels have a bolt underneath the center cap that holds the cone in place and must be removed first BEFORE attempting to remove the cone. This nut holds the cone on much better than the factory original which would occasionally take a "vacation" while driving.

Not original but don't have a bolt under center cap. Just the "clips". That being said, what's best way to get them off- the screwdriver in the slots method?

          Bill:

I just gave you the best tool. Put the puller end (whichever fits best) into the center cap slot (any one) and pull the cap off. Put a towel under/beside wheel to catch the center cap.

Recommended by JohnZ (John Hinckley) and used by me and MANY others with 1967 wheels. Very easy and no wheel or cap damage. Promise.

            Joe,
With this tool, do you pull handle out toward you from wheel , or do use use it like a lever, using base of tool as fulcrum and pushing handle away from you toward wheel?
            Thanks

              Bill:

No lever action required. Simply insert puller end into notch(es) behind the starburst and pull the starburst out. Generally only requires one pull.

Your local Harbor Freight has this tool very reasonable. I have used it many times with no marks on either the wheels or center starburst. DONT use a screwdriver. Gary

Yes just as you mentioned but do two at opposite sides at the same time. This avoids one clip hanging up with the other three released.

                      Larry,
I went to NAPA and bought a seal puller as you recommended. Worked like a charm. Greatly decreased need for bad words.
                      Thanks

Always keep a couple of the clips as spares on hand in the event that one becomes useless.
