67 BB best way to weld new lower radiator supports

I have tried searching the forum to no avail. I have removed the rusted lower supports that were spot welded. Now to weld in the new ones. Is it best to just weld the edges of the new brackets or drill holes in the new ones and plug weld them? I don't have a spot welder. Curios what other have done that worked well.
    Thanks
    Tom

Tom, AS a welder it depends as to how they were as new and how you want them. If you drill holes and weld the holes up then grind smooth you will never see the weld. If it was welded on the edge I would do that. Me I would drill the hole, weld, just enough to fill the hole(mig welding) if you can. If done right looks like a spot weld. For what it's worth.

Greg. The originals were spot welded. I'm not a professional welder, but I think that I can get it to hold and hopefully look good. They are not easy to see once it is back in the car. Would a 3/16" hole be large enough or would a 1/4" hole be better. the brackets are only about 3/4" wide where welded.
      Thanks for your help.

Tom, As I said a Mig welder will help , A 1/4" hole will work just make sure it is clean and put the ground on the back piece not the part with hole drilled so when you start the arc, it wants to start in the hole not around the hole. Hope this helps. Also just bring the weld even and cover the hole, it will look like a spot weld.

It takes a real artist with the mig welder to make a plug weld appear as a spot weld. No room for mistakes and grinding.

You can always dress up work with body filler to give the “illusion”. Then paint as cover up.

Tom, check your Chapter to see if anyone is a TIG welder. The TIG is a precision instrument compared to a MIG and from experience you can all but duplicate the spot weld with a TIG. I drill out the spot, remove the bad section that was held in place with the spots, then grind flush the spot remains on the good surface. Then measure the new material and drill holes where the spots were in the diameter you want the size of the spot to be, then the welder can do his thing and your spots will be like new. Good Luck!
