I just looked at my July 18 built 68 coupe. It does not have that plate. The cover is black Masonite or whatever they call it. The car is pretty original but I suppose it could have been changed.

Whats interesting is is there is a note from the original owner that says he “went through two batteries in the first three weeks” and there is a warranty replacement for the battery in the book when the car had less than 100 miles. I guess the light was on. To be honest, I don’t know if the light is still hooked up. I have the battery out of the car for storage now but if it ever warms up, I’ll check it.

Without a doubt they are the same. It's just as I theorized above-----it was a part used for a particular application and cataloged only for that application but used for another application on a more-or-less "ad hoc" basis.

I think the term commonly used to describe these doors, Masonite, is a misnomer. Masonite is made from wood fiber but it's a much harder material than that of which these doors were constructed. This material is more like a "press board" in which "sawdust" is treated with some sort of glue and pressed together. It's much softer and less durable than Masonite.
