    Carburetor cleaner

I am trying to clean and rebuild an especially funky carburetor. Not having much luck with soaking in 1 gallon can of cleaner or with over the counter spray carb cleaner.
Anyone have a suggestion for a carb cleaner that really works.

Is the "one gallon"of cleaner you are using, carb cleaner? If it is it should work well.

Holley manuals, say "carb cleaner" won't remove everything. Says after carb cleaner, use lacquer thinner, then wash in extremely hot water; air dry and blow out passages.

I've used Berryman Chem-Dip with pretty good success. It comes in a gallon can and has a parts tray inside. I've had it remove carbon buildup without any scrubbing necessary on carburetors in the past. You don't want to leave parts in the dip longer than what is recommended. It's pretty potent stuff. I don't know if it will go after rubber or plastic, but I would remove those items with any carburetor cleaner. It's very aggressive with aluminum but not so much with brass as brass is a lot harder than aluminum. You need to rinse thoroughly with water.

Don't put plastic or rubber parts in carb cleaner or laquer thinner. Do you have a manufacturer's carb manual for whatever carb you're rebuilding? I'd highly recommend getting one.

First dip your carb/fi parts in a good carb cleaner. I have less than two gallons of carb cleaner from the old days that I ration. I am going to try Schusters suggestion ASAP.
Then go to Lowes and buy a gallon of Zep All Purpose cleaner. Its' green. Whatever the instructions say delute it more. I put it in my ultrasonic cleaner with heat. I set my timer for 30 minutes. Parts are then decent. With todays wonderful ethanol the fuel bowls are a total loss.
The carb cleaner and the Zep do a decent job. John

It took me three 'donor' carbs to come up with the right combination of metering rods, floor jets, choke cover and external numbers for a correct WCFB for my 63 250hp car. I used the CRC carb cleaner along with some Gunk carb cleaner and they did a decent job. The Frankenstein (but all correct) carb now runs great with a Daytona Parts rebuild kit (the BEST IMO!).

I buy my cleaner in 5 gallon cans and only found one that works (almost like the old stuff) Berrymans. I sent a 5 gallon can back to NAPA that was brand X. I wouldn't do a thing. They ordered Berrymans and I was back in business. Other one that is great without the stink is my sonic cleaner.

If you're asking what it is; its an engine "top end" cleaner for one thing. Also used a lot in the marine industry.
