    Lacquer paint

When did Chevrolet stop painting Corvettes with lacquer paint. Must lacquer paint be used on Corvettes that originally were painted in lacquer for judging?

As far as I know, the last Corvette painted with lacquer paint was the last one (1981) built in St. Louis.

Assuming that a judge can discern the difference, I believe there is a judging penalty for a Corvette originally painted with lacquer which is re-painted in non-lacquer.

The rules have changed in judging paint and there are now standard deductions but it is all based on appearance. If the car appears as it left the factory full credit is given for the paint regardless of the type of paint used. If the car is base coat clear coat and wet sanded smooth then buffed it could take a full deduction but if it is left with some texture it can get full credit or at least partial credit depending on the appearance. Areas like the door openings and hood ledge should be dull.

GM used 2 kinds of lacquer. They started with lacquer then went to acrylic lacquer. Acrylic wasn't my favorite of the 2 lacquers.

I kind of remember an "enamel" type paint being used on cars in the 50's and 60's. Don't know if it
was ever used on a vette since it needed to be "baked' on. But it was supposed to be harder and more durable than lacquer.

            Stephen,
Synthetic automotive enamel. It couldn't be recovered after a few hours and shops would do a wipe down if they ran the paint. Never saw it on GM but it did have a great finish and lasted.

The lacquer paint used on early Corvettes was called nitrocellulose lacquer. I don't know when that changed to acrylic lacquer but I think it was rather early in the C1 era.

                Joe,
I remember acrylic lacquer being used when the metalic paint came out. From what I remember they said "no need to use clear over acrylic" it has acrylic that sets up over the pigment. Spider web and what we called in the midwest "paint check" seemed to follow in a few years outside.
I loved acrylic enamel when it came out. Went on like lacquer, could be rubbed out and lasted. I believe its formula is now the base coat on the BC CC.

Yes, as far as I know, no clear coat was ever used in conjunction with acrylic lacquer on a Corvette.

I think the first Corvette acrylic lacquer was Inca Silver in 1957. By '58 or '59 all GM cars were painted with acrylic lacquer, but I believe light trucks were painted with alkyd enamel.
