1970 454 Remove Oil Pump and Windage Tray

I am trying to remove the oil pump and windage tray from my 454 390 hp engine to replace the rear main seal. I have removed the oil pan and five nuts holding the windage tray. The oil pickup tube is welded to the oil pump preventing the removal of the windage tray. The best solution I can come up with is to use a line wrench to loosen the bolt holding the oil pump and remove the oil pump and windage tray at the same time. I will then tighten the oil pump bolt with the line wrench when I put it back on.

If someone has a better solution, please let me know.

    Here is a picture:

    Thanks,
    Allen

    Allen,
When I replaced the rear main seal in my 67 390hp 427 last year I don't remember having any problem removing the windage tray. I think the trays are the same. I don't think I took any pictures but I will look.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
    Kind regards

I replaced the RMS in my 454 a couple of years ago. As I recall, it was straight forward removing the windage tray and oil pump with a ratchet and socket. I did this on my back with the engine in the car, so your situation should be easier. I wish I could remember the details to be more helpful.

Maybe someone has a fresher memory of this procedure...

The Tray has to come off first it's maybe jam up try prying it out even if you have to bend it, someone must of jam that Tray in there the last time you may have to trim and straighten the tray out so it will bolt back much easier , oil pump hold down bolt has a threaded stud to support the Tray , your going to have hard time taken that oil pump bolt coming out without first taken the Tray off first . Thanks for the replies.

I marked the top of the stud to show where it lined up front to back on the motor to get it back to the previous torque. I then used a line wrench to loosen and remove the stud holding the oil pump. I have the oil pump and windage tray out. I will replace the main rear seal tomorrow and put the oil pump and windage tray back on. I will tighten the oil pump stud with a line wrench until the mark I made on the stud is lined up front to rear on the engine.

Hope you get a good 65lb torque on that oil pump bolt , how it works is you install the oil pump and line up the dist. shaft torque the oil pump to 65lb then install the Tray after you install the pump , i can't see you putting the Pump and Tray on the same time , the Tray should go on very easy after the oil pump install , something not right with the Tray if you have to put the Pump and Tray on at the same time something wrong ??
