1970 Big Block Head Gaskets

I am restoring a 70 big block engine and have a question about the head gaskets. Just below the #1 and #8 spark plugs I have about 1/4" X 1/2" of head gasket showing as shown below.

Here is a picture at the #1 spark plug:



Here is a picture at the #8 spark plug:



Do original head gaskets look like this?

The original gaskets were a steel shim type gasket and, installed, appear about like the ones pictured. However, in your second photo on the left side it looks almost like a composition gasket. That might just be the photo or some residue in this area. The right side exposed section of the gasket looks right, though.

In the second picture on the left, that is a portion of the block with all of the paint removed. The right side is the exposed gasket I was concerned about. Glad to hear it is correct.
