Thank you Peter! Yes, even through 20 owners, and 85K+ miles over 52 years, the frame was very well preserved and cleaned up very easily. The last 37 years in California didn't hurt, and my restorer knows his business when it comes to frames.

Hi Dick, I am removing the frame on my 68 L-71, 4speed, 4:11 conv. Please tell me what epoxy primer you used and what deltron paint so I can duplicate your process. I am having the frame cleaned at a powder coating co. down the street. Also how did you coat the inside of the frame ? thank you, Scott, woodboatfan@gmail.com, 562-619-4016

Understand that the asphalt paint was not very durable and was soluble in petroleum solvents. So if you try to clean off some oil or grease with mineral spirits it will also take off the asphalt paint. Its primary purpose was to minimize surface rust during outside storage prior to going into the plant for a job and during storage and shipping of finished cars and sitting on dealer lots, especially during the winter months.

So its a good idea to apply a high quality rust preventative primer undercoat on the cleaned up frame, at least on the outside.

I recall some kind of franchise outfit decades ago called "Redi-Strip" that could dip a complete body to derust and then prime in big tanks, but they went broke.
