if u r referring to the pair of spark plug heat shields on each side of the engine, all 3 of our 57 radio delta vets had them on when they were judged. no deductions. i didn't check the judging manual but i'll guess the issue is addressed therein. regards, mike

My 57 without a radio did come with the heat shields.

Re: 1957 lower heat shields Radio delete

How could a 1957 be a "radio delete" car when radios were not provided as standard equipment? What was there to delete?

The 1957 AIM Engine Sec.6 Sheet 3.00 clearly shows the Spark Plug Heat Shields are to be installed, 3736303 and 3736304. FOA 102 Radio AIM sheets do not show those plug shields, so therefore they were installed on all engines, radio or not. Subsequent year AIMs also show the similar plug shield instructions.

Also keep in mind for engines WITH Radio Horizontal Ignition shielding, if the Spark Plug Heat Shields are NOT installed, the spark plug boots at the #5 and #6 positions will be very susceptible to excessive heat from the exhaust manifold center sections and may burn. I have experienced this "feature".

What about the ignition CHROME shields by the spark plugs.3736235/3736236 Horizontal ones. That are held on on with wing nuts. Were the L shaped brackets that bolted to the manifold there if even there was no Radio.Part #3736164

Dan, I would say no, because the FOA 102 section shows those part numbers to be installed, just like the Horizontal shields themselves, which are both part of FOA 102. To me, as with all AIM references, it tells me that if the part# is shown then that part should be assembled as instructed for that AIM page. Since those L brackets 3736164 are ONLY shown in the FOA 102 page, then only if a radio was installed would they be used.

Also, parts that are shown without part numbers are typically already there. Example on that page: "Support" in View B LH Only(Driver Side lower plug wire keeper). That should be there even without FOA 102. That part # is shown in Sec 12 Sheet 10.000 part# 3728953.

Note the circled 4(SYM) regarding the Driver Side vertical plug wire support. In the revision history, SYM 4 shows the part# "removed". This must have been caught at some point because the FOA 102 Bill of Materials may have previously added that support to the list of parts, when in fact it was NOT needed. That part was installed previously and is held in place using a Intake Manifold bolt. See AIM Sec 12 Sheet 10.000 part# 3728955.

Note FOA 102 Item Z(circled) in View B. Item Z is actually 2 parts, the Bolt(wing bolt) and the Washer. At the top of the FOA 102 page those item part#'s are shown. Therefore those parts are part of the FOA 102 Assembly instructions.

Also "Ignition Coil", Support Assy(Driver Side vertical plug wire support). All of these parts were already mounted prior to FOA 102 equipment. The vertical plug wire Support on the Pasenger side, however, is called out with its Part# in Sec 6 Sheet 4.00. 3728952. This part may be different for other engine combinations.

Now not all of this is "always" the case as there are often errors in the AIMs, or my interpretation of them, but in most cases this is the way I try to understand assembly protocols.
