    Spare Tire - Flight Judging

I have the original spare which was never mounted. Since it was stowed away in the carrier, the tire has two rub indentations where the above carrier cover came in contact with it and caused the rub marks. Should I keep it in for judging or get a replacement repro? If the tire is deemed unsafe I will lose points and I will also loose points with the repro. Is it a wash to keep or replace?

Does grove between treads show visible cracking? As tire is original, your issue would be condition. Use standard deduction guideline #3 to assess point loss of your likely replacement. You can then decide if trading originality points for condition points and at what cost ($$)makes sense.

From your brief description, I would keep original spare.

I love to see original spares, bring it and you will most likely never receive a deduction. Especially with a spare that has never been mounted.

                Jack,

Can you tell us if your original spare has any balance weights on it? If so, can you describe the logo?

There is a weight on the inside of the wheel. It has a 1/2 on the left of the oval with the number 14 incased in an oval and another 1/2 on the right of the oval. Picture to follow.

                    Jack,
My original wheel and tire has a similar weight. The only difference is mine is a 1 oz vs your 1/2 oz.

Is that the original spare from your '67?

                        Jack,

And the car in question is a '71?

Wheel balance weights with the logo consisting of the number 14 inside an oval border were made by the Plumbium Manufacturing Corporation, Bristol, Tennessee, and sold them under several names, including Speed Clip Manufacturing Corporation. Speed Clip was one of at least 5 suppliers of wheel weights to GM.

                              Leif,

I've seen weights with the 14 in an oval logo on several '69 original spare, and now I know that they were used as early as '67 and at least until '71. Maybe some day people will stop putting Micro weights on every wheel.
