I think it's some sort of errant stamping. 1968 Muncie transmissions did not use a suffix code (i.e. any character after the date code)..

The example given in the 1968-1969 of the 4th edition Information Manual and Judging Guide, page 103,shows an example: P8E03A decoded is a Muncie HD 4-speed 1968 Model May 03 2.52:1 - wide range M20. Is that a bad example in the book?

Transmission production codes including a suffix code did not begin until about mid 1969.

              Re: Muncie 4 Speed Identification

In the Camaro world, we've documented a lot of 67 and 68 Muncie transmissions with a spare character at the end of the code. 67's were mostly a cut off 3 or 7 (hard to tell) and 68's were mostly a cut-off E (but again, hard to tell). There were others as well. Here are a couple examples for 1968 (see below). Other divisions also had cut off characters as shown in the blow picture of the P8M23 with a cut off K or X. This one came from an Olds 442.

We don't believe it's an inspection stamp, but merely a place holder.
