As you can probably tell from my posts lately, I just bought a 78 Pace car. Trying to figure how much is not original to this car ! It is a L82 and the breather is a single flat snorkel with no air hose. Everything I have seen in photos shows a double flat snorkel with flex air hose attached to a vent. I have no vents anywhere to attach anything to ! This was #123 pace car and i am wondering if there was a design change some where along the line to the breather assembly with a double snorkel. It's a 23K mile car and seems to have everything else original on it. Thanks in advance

Re: 78 pace car breather
i think you're asking about the air filter housing which is nothing to do with the breather. What does your judging guide say about the number snorkels?- Top

Fifth V.I.N. digit identifies original motor. 1Z87L8S9XXXXX would indicate L48, while 1Z8748S9XXXXX indicates L82. This example V.I.N. displays a six digit Plant Sequence Number starting with "9" - indicating Pace Car. Non Pace Cars had Plant Sequence Numbers beginning with "4".
That said, L48 engine used a single snorkel housing in left front quarter. Sitting atop fan shroud was a black plastic molded plenum that fed air to single snorkel through flexible wire reinforced black paper air duct.
Optional L82 engine used a dual snorkel housing with one left front quarter inlet - second inlet was towards passenger side fan shroud. L82 molded plastic plenum also was connected with wire reinforced black paper air ducts. Passenger side plenum outlet sat lower. (Description page 69 of 1978-1979 Judging Guide.
First need to check if you have L48 or L82 engine. Valve cover upgrades were/are popular. Does your car retain molded black plastic plenum sitting above fan shroud?

Re: 78 pace car breather
Given an L82, it is missing emission control equipment to include a smog pump, AIR valves, pipe assemblies ,check valves, etc. along with the air pre-heat corrugated black hose (driver's side) to connects to the exhaust manifold. The breather tube (as you note) that is missing connects to the Thermac air cleaner that has the dual flex hose that brings in cold air from the front of the radiator. If you take a photo with the air cleaner off, and post it, we can tell tell you what else is missing.
Do note it does have its yellow-bodied PCV valve which are extremely difficult to get.Tom Russo

Re: 78 pace car breather
I think the air cleaner ass'y is not correct for any year Corvette, not just '78. Ironically, almost all of the actual 'breather ass'y' is missing too.- Top
