Possibly a DUMB question, but the Corvette Black book lists a total of 46776 Corvettes built. MX1 =38614. M21=3385 ...what did the other 4777 get?? Was there a 3 speed option ??

Re: 78 Corvette Trans
...and the MM4 wide ratio 4 speed was actually a version of the old Saginaw 4 speed used in some low and mid-performance Chevrolets (but never Corvettes) in the mid to late 60's. It's manufacture was transferred to Muncie, IN from Saginaw, MI and is sometimes called a Muncie although it shares very few components with the 63-74 Muncie transmissions. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 78 Corvette Trans
What all these tables and Black Books do not convey is the fact that the MM4 listed above is the base transmission or an M20. However, depending on engine option, it would call out either the Borg Warner M20 wide-ratio (L82) or the Saginaw M20 wide-ratio (L48) four-speed tranny. The Saginaw is a cast iron box and one in the same as JL describes above. The links below will take you to two articles published in the Corvette Restorer that details the 1978-79 four-speed transmissions. The first describes the three four-speeds of 1978 while the second describes the M20 Saginaw called out as the base four-speed transmission when the L48 was the engine option. The L82 base four-speed called out the Borg Warner M20.
The point is that the 4,773 number represents two (2) M20s, the Borg Warner and the Saginaw.
