I recently purchased a NOS 396 engine wire harness part number 6287038. It is different from early 396 harnesses in that it has 2 pink wires where other harnesses have the black with pink stripe wire that gets modified to plug into the TI harness. Neither the parts book or the aim show an early and late 396 harness. M&H Electric lists an early and late 396 harness with the late one having the 2 pink wires. Does anyone know when the vin cut off was between the two harnesses or have any information?

Re: 396 Engine Wire Harness
I have heard from 2 396 owners. A May car still has the black/pink wire from the starter R terminal through the engine harness to the TI harness and Wayne's Last 396 has the pink wires. Is there any other June or July built 396's that have the pink wires replacing the black/pink wire? How about late 65's with Air Conditioning?- Top

Re: 396 Engine Wire Harness
Stewart,
I restored 1965 VIN#22161 that was originally equipped with a 396 engine and it was/is equipped with the pink TI wires. I have attached some pictures of a couple of known original '65 396 equipped cars which show the black wire with the pink stripe. One is William Donavan's (maroon) unrestored car, but I have no record of the VIN for his car. The other is from one of Roy Sinor's car (blue) which is VIN 17,89x, and one more from the late Bill Williamson's unrestored original '65 396 project car. Another NCRS member to contact is Carl Nicole who was very generous with pictures of his '65 396 car that he has owned since I believe the late '60's or early '70's. I'd also contact William Donovan, he also sent me many excellent pictures and would probably be glad to share the VIN of his car, same with Carl.
I updated my post to include a picture from another '65 unrestored Duntov 396 showing the TI wire harness with the black wire with the pink stripe. The previous owners were/are Jody Balch and Gene Leonard. Jody may still own the car, but either of them should be able tell you what VIN the car was.
I hope this helps a little. I'll see what else I can come up with.
Regards,

Re: 396 Engine Wire Harness
James,
Thanks, that tells me what I needed in that this harness is correct for my 228xx 396 I am working on. It currently has a repo early design harness that was on the car when I bought it.
I remember Bill's was 173xx so that falls in line.
The maroon car looks interesting, thanks for the photo. I will keep him in mind as I am always needing photos of things.
I will keep checking as it would be good to know when the change was.

I have a large file of '65 396 pictures that I used for the restoration. Let me know what you need, chances are I have a picture of it. Most of my pictures are of unrestored, Duntov/Bowtie '65's. Here are a few picture of the '65 396 I restored and put through flight judging back in 2014.
