95 rear end cover seal gasket material- RTV?

My original 95 ( I bought from original Corvette guy in 95 mint), the rear end shows orange RTV lightly around the rear end cover. Is this OE or do you think the rear cover has been off and what should it be---gasket or special GM RTV and if so what?
    Thanks NCRS experts!
If I pull the cover and reseal (minor seep) , would ZDDP additive along with GM additive with the fluid be a good idea?

    Chris,

Seal is RTV, specifications called out in Service Manual. Rear axle (differential) lubricant would be per your Owner Manual. (Most likely GM No. 12345977 with 4 oz differential lubricant additive 1052358.) I would NOT use any other additive - just use what GM requires.

Your questions per RTV seal and lubricant are answered in your Service Manual.

How much is this thing leaking? Looking at Sections 4A and 4B in SM repair seems involved.

My rear is barely seeping, mainly wanted to know if there is factory RTV on the rear cover and if so, the color, I see a little orange RTV between rear cover and differential. Is this factory? Thanks! (95 LT1 coupe)

        Chris,

Sealant called out in 1995 Service Manual is GM p/n 9636067 (page 4B-7). Don't know color.

1994-1996 Judging Guide on Differential & Carrier makes no mention of sealant color (page 240) so I think you are good to go in any case.

          Yes, that's the correct color.

GM #9636067 was discontinued and replaced by GM #12345633 which is also now discontinued without supersession. However, this is not an RTV-type sealer. It is a urethane adhesive/sealer. RTV might work but it's not what was originally used or specified by GM in SERVICE.

                Joe,

Attached are extracts from 1984-1996 Parts & Illustrations Catalog. Illustration shows "gasket" as #15. Narrative page for #15 says RTV. That is why I said RTV.

As I mentioned, RTV may work. However, it's not the material used in PRODUCTION or the material recommended in the factory service manual. That material was GM #9636067 and its successor GM #12345633. These are a urethane-based sealer/adhesive. RTV usually does not have adhesive properties unless used with a primer (which is very hard to obtain).
