Assembly line painting clarification & parts processes.

I've been having a fantastic time going through the restoration process with my car. It's slow, but that's just fine with me. My rolling chassis is finished & I am very happy with the results, now I am working away at the body & paint & have a couple questions. I was just looking through some past posts here as well as in my Noland Adams book and I'd appreciate some clarification when I go through my painting process. Today, the headlight buckets were removed for 1st the time since assembly in 67. You'll see the Maroon over-spray from the 1975---79 owner who repainted her Marlboro Maroon in 76 because he found the car in a chicken coupe & it was all chicken claw scratched. He also had a 67 435 Roadster , so he decided to do bookends by painting the coupe Maroon. MUCH THANKS to Bill Gould who has helped me so much with this owner process.

Anyways back to the painting question; I have seen posts here where fellows said that the buckets were installed while painting on the line & others where they said both the buckets & upper vents were painted on the floor as they went through the painting process. From the pic attached you can see the original Marina blue inside, so I wanted to confirm that these were INDEED on the car when it went through the painting booth. I saw what looked like a 65 in Noland Adams book & I'd swear the buckets were not installed. I do know that the rear valance was hung by a couple bolts, so that is clear & finally the weather stripping was installed . Could I get the rundown to confirm these questions / procedure? It would seem if the buckets were installed that not much coverage was reached in the gaps & they probably had to rotate them in order to spray both top & bottom as best they could. I also noticed in Nolands book that the power window conduits in the doors were installed after painting. If there were other body parts I am missing here , please let me know. The plan is to do this as correct to original as possible including the over & under spay & I have seen from members posts here. Lastly, I have seen nothing as far as a template to protect the exterior paint during the blackout process afterwards. My apologies for rambling on so much.

    Thanks to all , Fred

Perfect Jack thanks. I also see the upper grills missing as well. Has anyone seen or for that matter made a "blackout template" or is it just easier to simply go with some heavy cotton tarps / blankets to cover the paint while doing the black out ?

Fred the support rods under the buckets were in place and should show some overspray, as does the lower radiator support on the bottom underside. The front of the radiator support and front inner wheels also would be blacked out after the paint was applied.

Thanks Ed. These are all the small things I want to make sure are done as original. Thanks very much.

Great set of photos but don't show them to OSHA...those inspectors would melt if they saw that sprayman with only a pair of cotton gloves as a form of PPE.

Jack, a beaut of a 66 big block.

So... how many different primers were there in 1966 and did they vary by color?

                  Hi Fred,

Congrats on your chassis completion. Beautiful work. Way ahead of my '66 390hp convertible. Your thread here confirmed answers to a couple of questions I've had on this subject also. Thanks.

Well, I've just got to ask.......I'm always open to new ideas for my shop. What is the fishing net enclosure around your chassis for? What is it keeping out/in? Mike

                    Hey Mike,
That's a secret trick of the trade. Any unwanted people come to my shop and the net drops on them. Lol.

                      Hahaha Fred,

If I was wondering, then I'm sure some others were too! You're shop is huge. I'm jealous. I've passed up offers to buy 2 Vettes from long time owners through the years simply because of nowhere to store them. We're gonna extend the garage in the future. There's a Mossport Green '66 coupe nearby up for grabs........hmmmmm. Plan B?

I saw by your profile that you've got a 390hp '67 and a 400hp '67. Either one of them AC? My '66 L-36 is. Mike

I guess I need to change that mike. Sold the 390 & YES the L-36 was an air car. My 1st Corvette. Sold it to get my triple silver 66 425 survivor , ex Sunday SCCA racer .Lots of fun to annoy the neighbors.

Good luck on the initial ignition! My '66 has been parked that long also. Think it was 1991. Jealous of the 425hp '66. Always keeping an eye out. Those are awesome Vettes. Mike

Just noticed something interesting in this photo. This appears to be a '66 427/390hp coupe with AC. There's no X-brace bars in the radiator support. Very cool shot.
