    Looking for a fan belt

This is for a 67 L79 No A/C and No power steering. This is the alternator belt. By researching this forum I've found reference that the correct belt was GM #3861946 which was 3/8" x 54".

I currently have a Quanta reproduction of this belt. It does work, but I have the alternator all the way out on the adjustment. The belt doesn't slip but it is looser than it should be. (Yes I have the correct water pump, crank, and alternator pulleys for the L79).

A little more research and I found a reference to RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association) 3L540. Searching on 3L540 I find references to various manufacturers like Gates and Dayco and show the correct size for 3L540 of 3/8" x 54". The only sources I have found are mail order. I really hate to pay $10 shipping to get an $8 belt.

Has anyone found a suitable belt for this application at a FLAPS? 66 or 67 L79 no power and no A/C.

By the way, measuring the Quanta belt I get 55 3/8 to 55 1/2 measuring around the outside diameter.

    Thanks,

    Don

don: does it have to be stamped with the GM # for judging? if not, I may have some old NORS belts I got over the chevy counter in the 70's. can it be a little less than 54" OD? mike

Did you really expect a reproduction belt to fit?

Best to take Mike up on his offer and end up with a belt that fits. Keep in mind it is only 20% for wrong molded in part number as long as belt is correct configuration.

FWIW, when I replaced the alternator fan belt on my 67 327 Air/PS car 3-4 years ago, it was trial and error at the FLAPS to come up with the correct size--when the first belt I bought was too long, I took it back and asked for the next two sizes shorter, tried and kept the one that fit best and took the other back. I had and still have no clue how to tell correct pulleys and whether the ones on my car were them or not, which doesn't matter since mine is NOM/non-show driver. I do know that the belt size the FLAPS came up with on the first try, was way too long.

I bought functional replacement belts for my 66 at NAPA . I believe that the part numbers were listed on their computer or maybe a printed catalog.

According to the specs on this NAPA belt it will fit the '67 350 HP, w/o A/c & w/o PS.

Quanta makes the correct size belt for this application.
