Though, unfortunately, not ever associated with the Corvette, I recall he did do a couple of substitute drives for Team McLaren back in the late sixties.
He came to my attention in the fifties when I read about his racing successes in Road & Track, usually in big displacement Ferrari sports-racing cars and then when on to race successfully in FIA, F1, and NASCAR, winning many well known races and then going on to construct his own F1 car, Indy Cars, and GTU and GTP IMSA cars for Toyota.
And then there was that unusual motorcycle!
I had the privilege of touring AAR in Santa Ana, CA back in 1993 as part of the newly formed MR2 Owner's Club.
He was a great racer, constructor, and all around good guy, and no doubt a roll model for many of us and a heck of a lot better roll model than many of the ball-sport "heros" of today.
