    '64 Horn Button Assembly

I am having trouble getting the horn button assembled in my steering column/steering wheel. When I disassembled it the horn button was installed down into the steering wheel from the front of the steering wheel which left the collar of the button on the front of the wheel. When I try to attach the steering shaft sleeve the tab on the bottom of the sleeve holds the sleeve away from the steering wheel and the horn button would constantly be compressed.

Looking at the shop manual and part supplier drawings the button is supposed to come in from the back side of the steering wheel through the turn signal canceller. The collar on the horn button will not fit inside the signal canceller so I am totally confused.

    What am I overlooking?

Dan, I'm not following the way you describe it. The plunger goes in the hub, next mount the steering wheel then install the horn mechanism (that's the part held in with 3 screws) Are you doing it somewhat different. How about a picture.

I got the horn button mounted through the back side of the turn signal canceller cam and up through the hub. The end of the horn button with the collar is now riding on the horn contact in the steering column and the other end is coming out the steering wheel side of the hub. The horn functions when I short the end of the button on the steering wheel side to the hub. When I attach the horn contact with the 3 screws and snap on the steering wheel cap and press on the cap nothing happens. With the horn contact fastened down with the screws nothing can move. So I don't know what is supposed to complete the circuit.

I haven't been able to figure out how to upload pictures to this forum from the Android tablet that I have. Works on other sights. I am going to go visit Verizon or find a 1st grader who can show me how it's done.

Not sure if this will help, these are pictures from my '65, didn't have any from my '64.

I finally got to your set up after some trial and error. My horn contact has a Z shaped extension on the back that presses on the horn button and prevents the horn contact from fitting flush to the steering wheel. I don't know if this is the problem so I ordered a new horn contact which is supposed to be here tomorrow. If it isn't different I'll be at a loss.

The horn button was the issue. The old part was the wrong button.
