    427/390 oil pan removal

Can the oil pan on a 427 be removed without raising the engine? Clearance considerations between pan, crank shaft, and frame cross member......

      Stephen------

...and unless you're really concerned about judging points, use a 1 piece oil pan gasket when you put it all back together. You MAY have to use slightly longer bolts when you do this but so be it.

Drop the tie rod and you are good to go

...not sure about big blocks, but you can remove the SB SHP/FI big pan by removing the two bolts that secure the idler arm to the RH frame rail and pull the relay rod down as far as possible for clearance. The RH wheel will turn out, but the toe setting should go back to where it was when you reattach the idler arm. It's a lot easier than removing the pitman arm with a puller or the tie rods with a pickle fork that can tear the boots.

If more clearance is required you'll have to remove the Pitman arm.

same with big blocks. Just unbolt the idler arm and pull down the relay rod. Then there is room to remove the pan. simpler than any other chevy.
