I have a '65 Coupe. I am the third owner. It is a two time Top Flight car, one Chapter and one Regional. I stripped this car several years ago and painted it with lacquer paint. I bought the paint from TCP Global. Goldwood Yellow was the color. I never had the thought that the color could be anything but Goldwood Yellow. Well, that was the wrong assumption as it is not correct (I should have been more diligent about the match; live and learn). It has a green tint and is simply not correct and because of that I want to repaint-I do my own paint work. (Also it has gotten a couple of scratches and chips). I need some help of a supplier of lacquer paint (and not TCP Global). I need a supplier that can get the color correct. Thanks for any guidance on this issue. Mike Martin; Madison, Ms

Re: '65 Repaint
I reached out to Tom Ames re this lacquer paint need that I have. He replied that he knew of no source for lacquer paint. So I am asking folks on this forum if someone knows of a vendor that can supply and correctly mix lacquer paint. Goldwood Yellow. Surely there is a source out there somewhere. Thanks.

Re: '65 Repaint
Joe Ray advises to try an outfit ColorRite (PA.). I called and they have the Code XX Goldwood Yellow lacquer paint. They are sending 2 ozs. to test shoot. I'll advise re the match. Nice folks. Product is expensive and sold at a max only in quarts.- Top

Re: '65 Repaint
Mike,
To be accurate here is a copy of my reply
Mike,
Unfortunately I have no information on a reliable source for lacquer, there my be one but I am not aware of it. Color match is a difficult situation no matter what material you use. The best results come from custom tinting the material to existing color on your vehicle. The paint companies are not going to expend a lot of time creating matches for a market as small as the restoration industry, because of this we must find creative methods to secure the results we want. I have not used lacquer for many years due to the difficulty getting color match without having your own mixing system. As time progresses it will become even more difficult to work with lacquer materials.
Tom
It is not that I know of no source but I know of no reliable source and explained the difficulty with color match. If you want a correct color you must first have something to match to, different judges may have differing opinions on what's correct without a reliable standard.

Re: '65 Repaint
After you determine what paint you are going to use, you can send some sample spray outs samples to John Ballard. He will be able to advice you in which direction to go. Will probably take several times. If you start down this road be sure chart everything, including temperature, humidity.- Top

Re: '65 Repaint
Can you find some original paint on your car, under the door trim panel, under the carpet or behind the dash? If so, it's been hidden from the sun and should be a good sample to match your paint to.
You might want to consider a urethane paint. Lacquer is an unstable substrate that begins to deteriorate as soon as you apply it in addition to the match issues Tom mentions. With a solid color such as yellow, you can achieve a factory like result if flight judging is a goal.- Top

Re: '65 Repaint
Looking forward to Mike's results from Colorite as he is an expert at restoring and painting Corvettes. And yes, his goal is to reproduce the correct color in lacquer as he mentioned.
I have used Colorite on two Corvettes. A Black 58 and a Saddle Tan 63. That involved three different Lacquer colors for the exterior and interior of the 63 and two different colors for the 58. I was never questioned by any NCRS judge for the color on either of the Corvettes. The 58 was a Top Flight car and the 63 was a Duntov Corvette that year
As matter of fact in 1993 Larry Sinoda approached me at Cypress Gardens and complimented me on the 63 Saddle Tan Coupe stating that he had originally mixed the color for 1963 Saddle Tan Corvettes and the 63 was perfect. He autographed the NOS 1963 glove box face for me. And yes, my head swelled!

Re: '65 Repaint
As a follow-up on this thread, we received one quart of the Code XX Goldwood Yellow lacquer paint from ColorRite. We sprayed the rear lower valance which was off the car and it is spot on to the original paint still on the back side of the doors. This paint is not inexpensive at about $200 a quart. The thinner that goes with it (1:1) is about $20+/-. I talked to Tom up there (800-358-1882) and he made me a deal @ $165 a quart (part of the deal was that I planned to buy another 4 quarts if the paint matched good). I told him there was some interest in lacquer paint with the NCRS folks and that he needed to cut a deal to NCRS folks that called. I think anyone interested should talk with him and tell him you want the same deal he gave me. Couldn't hurt to do so. He's a really nice guy. In any case, this is a good source of lacquer paint. Tks,
