    FI High Pressure Fuel Pump

What direction does the fuel injection high pressure fuel pump rotate? I took mine apart to clean out all the gummed up gas and when I reassembled it, it spins more freely counter clockwise as compared to clockwise. Is there a trick to the tightening sequence that I am not aware of? I have disassembled and re-assembled these pumps in the past without any difficulties. This is for a 4800 unit, not that it should matter.

Perry. Putting the cable in from the rear-the pump turns clockwise.
Did you lap the end plate on a granite surface plate? Mic the center section first. Then Mic the two gears. Difference in height is about 6 tenths. Maybe 7 at the most.
Now a NOS service replacement pump will have more clearance and hence the engine has idle issues.
Do you have much play with the shaft going thru the carbon bushings. Some of the repro shafts out there aren't any good. They are undersize.
Too much play on the shaft could be an issues. But I am guessing you might not have the thick spacer positioned correctly. You might have the gear or gears digging into the center section when the pump is turning clockwise hence the spinning issue.
I first tighten the two allen head screws that are opposite one another. And then I tighten the other two screws.

Yesterday I rebuilt a pump that Bubba messed up. The big spacer was on backwards. I use big pin gauges on the two bore holes. The larger hole of the two is for the drive gear. The smaller hole is for the drive gear. Drive gear has a carbon bushing in it.
Try this trick Perry. Flip the idler gear upside down. I mark the gear with a china marker. According to the directions in the ST-12 manual aka Corvette Servicing Guide. John D.

Thanks for your reply Jon. Where can one purchase a granite surface plate? As far as the measurements, I will check them tomorrow.

        Perry,
Google granite surfacing plate and you will have many options. I can't find the invoice for mine but shipping is a consideration as they are heavy. A MUST have for any F.I. owner for a small price (thanks Jim T.).

Would a piece of tempered glass work in a pinch?

I have a typo in my instructions. I cannot edit the post for some reason. There are two pump gears. One is the drive gear that goes on the main shaft.. The other is the idler gear that goes on the Pin. The idler gear has a carbon sleeve/bushing in it.

800-221-0270 www.travers.com I suggest you buy a 12 x 18. It's wonderful and really great for FI work. I now resurface the bottom of all the plenums myself instead of taking them to a machine shop. They didn't meet my standards of workmanship.
Then go on Ebay, etc and buy 12 x 18 sheets of sandpaper for floor sanders. Sticky on one side. I use grits from 100 to 150.
If I had to go with one grit I would buy 120 Grit.
Story: When Vinnie Peters wanted a pic of a surface plate for my article I ordered a pink one from Travers. They send it thru the post office.
My mailman knocked on my door and said to me: "DeGregory just what in the hell do you have in that box"???
The plates are very heavy. Travers makes out and so do we as they use one of those Flat rate boxes. Postage is not cheap but it is affordable.
Now you will have a choice of buying with a ledge or without a ledge. I have one of each. Not sure which is my favorite. John

Ian old friend. The answer it NO NO. Nor is a piece of your expensive kitchen counter top or a sheet of aluminum or other "stuff".
                  Get the real deal. John

No wonder rebuilding an FI unit is so expensive! :P
