Michael, Congratulations on your new purchase. Our Battery deduction was three points. The comment was BALLARDIZED, a compliment to John's creativity! off to see the World Junior's Hockey game in Buffalo today.

Why would you have to unscrew the cap? Can't you refuse and say this "is as it appeared from the factory". Who looks inside a cap from the factory?

This is another does not make sense in the NCRS. Some parts will eventually be completely impossible to get. Lets start checking brake fluid and gasoline for original content. I love original parts but we can only go so far. Just my 2 cents.

You can refuse, and I always do, and I always get a 7 point deduction........

Thanks Scott! It went pretty smoothly, my little dealer only has 1 allocation so needed to get it in, although many of the RPOs were not loaded in the system yet, like the engine build experience, so I will have to get back to them.

I have been doing this battery thing all wrong all these years. I should have checked with John to see what he has first.......have fun at your big game, and keep warm. See you in Florida?

I see a lot of old timers here cheating. hahaha.
One time I wrote an article for the Pittsburgh Tri-State chapter and then Vinnie put in "The Restorer".
"Did You Read the Manual" was the title of the article. I wrote it in frustration as the majority of the phone calls I get for FI questions it appears no one reads anymore. They just go on Forums and ask questions.

See Judging Reference Manual. I have the 8th Edition. Page 30- Batteries. Says" DO NOT REMOVE THE CAPS FOR INSPECTION"

I know well what it says John, I also know I have been asked more than once to remove one, at Regionals and Nationals........

I'll also say I have seen "astute" owners remove one to show a judge, without being asked........

Michael I don't get involved with the judging process. Especially on '63's.

He tried, using roofing tar, but it's WAY too rough... and too dull. He tells me it is as rough as 36 grit sand paper.

                      /[QUOTE]

...depends on what you mean by "roofing tar". There are several varieties. IMO Henry's Asphalt Emulsion is a pretty close. It's water soluble when applied, but becomes only solvent (mineral spirits) soluble when dry. It can be worked to a smooth finish either when applied with a spray bottle of water and putty knife, or when dry with mineral spirits. The finish is smooth, and it remains fairly soft and pliable for a long time, especially if not exposed to direct sunlight. I think the surface patina can be worked to achieve the desired level of gloss, especially with mineral spirits after it has dried. The smoother the surface the less dull it will appear. If that doesn't work, try a lacquer clear coat. The originals may have had some sort of clear coat as I recall that it dulls with age, and natural dried "tar" is usually pretty dull.

Don't confuse the Asphalt Emulsion product with Henry's Plastic Roof Cement... totally different product that won't work to simulate a tar top.

Henry's roofing products are sold by Home Depot.

It's fun, but do not get overly sensitive and smile.
Know I opened one cap to show the liquid below, judge asked if he could see another.
Naturally that did not have liquid, just ran out of cups to install.
Hay I was not trying to get the points just having fun.

That is good information Alan, saves me some time and work. I had considered gluing in a cup under 1 cap and filling the hole with water so fluid is visible on the bottom of the cap. Now I know the judges will just keep asking you to remove more and more, so I will not go to that trouble............
