Were the 1/4 20 slotted screws that mount the starter solenoid to they starter painted black . Did the battery cable nut the one on the solenoid take a 1/2 or 9/16 wrench . I have both on the original solenoids i have .

1957 AIM Sec 12 Sheet 10 shows the Solenoid Battery cable nut as Part# 124829 3/8"-16. In the Standard Hardware pages I have(1929-1959), this Part # is described as a Check Nut(Lock/Jam nut) as opposed to a standard Hex nut. A standard 3/8-16 Hex nut uses a 9/16" wrench across the flats.
However, I'm thinking the 124829 Check nut used the next higher wrench size, 5/8" ATF. I had some NOS Solenoids and they all came with 5/8" ATF nuts.
