    2008 Z06 427 hood

I'm looking at buying a 2008 Z06. Why do some have the 427 badge on the hood and some don't? The one I'm looking at doesn't. Anything else I should know about this model?
    Thank you

The 427 badge on the hood is an owner or dealer inspired option. 2008 Z06 from Bowling Green had no 427 badges.

Terry Thanks for the info. How do you like your Z06 and is there anything I should be aware of with this year / model.

I enjoy it very much, as many NCRS members know well. It has been to numerous meets all over the country. It has been to both coasts twice and the Gulf once. I have done several 1K mile days, and two trips on the Milford Proving Ground . 87K miles in 10 years of almost trouble free ownership. Four or five (I forget the exact number) sets of tires and one computer re-flash for check engine light are the only complaints I can muster. As with any vehicle one has to keep up maintenance. The factory wheel alignment is set for the track. If using it as a road car, as I have, get the alignment reset for highway use. It took me two sets of tires to learn that lesson.

          Terry,
Sounds like you love to drive your Z06. I've been reading about this valve guide issue on the posts for the Z06. What would I look for? It sounds scary?

For a while I read those posts also. Then I decided I had enough miles on the car that I had passed the point of having any issues with the valve train, so I quit reading about those issues and got on with my life.

Terry great info. Get on living or get on dying. I would love to have the miles you have enjoyed. Going to look at it again today. Thanks

Yep concur with previous discussion. The 427 hood emblem(s) is a GM option and rather pricey. A template is provided for proper hood placement. Another option that is kinda fun is the NPP optional exhaust remote that allows you to open the exhaust ports on a full time basis. Easy to install and fairly inexpensive. Good luck with your search.

So am I correct in saying you couldn't order the 427 emblems as an option and installed by GM at the factory? Just wanted to clarify. This valve guide thing is crazy. Why would one risk not fixing it? GM role in this doesn't surprise me. Sounds like they are saying it's not a big deal. Thanks for the info on the alignment. That will save some cash.

To the best of my knowledge in 2008 the 427 emblems were not a factory installed option. My car is an October 2007 build, and I didn't closely follow the build through out the model year, but my recollection is the 427 emblems became available later in the model year and then were only available "over the counter." Other model years may be different, but I don't think so.

The valve train issues also became an internet sensation later in 2008 or into the 2009 model year, and by that time I had enough miles on my car that I was past the point of no return. That made it easy for me to put those issues out of my mind. If those reports are going to cause one sleepless nights then I would suggest it is best to invest in a fix of the situation. I have always believed that all Corvettes are just Chevrolets in fancy wrappings and as Chevrolets they are as reliable as rocks given reasonable maintenance and lack of outright abuse. I have had nothing in my experience to make me believe otherwise.

Your caution about cold weather reminds me to also caution about wet weather.

The wide tires on the Z06 (especially the Goodyears) are not wet weather friendly. I joke with the Chevrolet engineers I know that they built a very fine automobile, but a lousy boat. Even the Michelins will hydro-plane at a drop of wet on the road, so care in the wet is essential to the car's survival.

I had one rainy run on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I think I was going to Carlisle) where the car kept "twitching" and I couldn't figure out what it was. Once the roads were dry I realized it was the traction control reacting to the rear wheels losing traction due to hydroplaning. That experience put the fear of God into me. When it rains I slow down now and wish I was in my daily drivers.

Thanks Terry for the info. I got the service report today on the car I'm looking at. Just a few things replaced. Window, window regulator, switch left side door handle, powertrain control module and wheel drive shaft nut. Not sure if these are common problems or a red flag about this car? Can you help with the vin # on when this car was built. Maybe an early model?
