    C-2 headlight bucket final adjustment

Having received my rebuilt headlight motors , I decided that this would be the perfect time to make sure the buckets are aligned correctly . They will never be this easy again !

Closed position is easy to figure ! Open on the other hand , not so much. After reading through tons of archives and finding nothing, I went to the AIM and the CSM .

The Service manual says : "Adjust so that mounting face of panel is within 2 degrees of vertical "

While the AIM says: "Adjust so that MTG. Face of the PNL. Asm. is within 2 degrees vertical with PNL. ASM. in a full open position."

So what I take away from that is I should complete the assembly by installing the " BEZEL " which I assume is the "MOUNTING FACE" even though I have not set the headlights up yet . Fine ! So how does one come up to a + or - 2 degrees of vertical on buckets with or without bezels , that have no discernible straight surfaces ? And what sort of measuring devise might one use to determine that elusive degree or two ?

I adjust them with the bezel off and using this tool. https://www.harborfreight.com/dial-g...der-34214.html

Jim, After reading this a number of times-slowly, I take both statements as saying the same thing. The second statement doesn't say PNL ASM with bezel.

          Jim,

Thanks for the heads up on the correct tool . Care to elaborate on where exactly I place it ? Neither side edge of the bucket looks straight to me , though I could be wrong .

            Fred ,

Apparently inflation rears it's ugly head as they are now 5 bucks !

I sent them off to Joe Ray . You can find him here on the Forum..

Jim with the outer headlight bezel off, if that angle tool does not fit just put a straight edge from top to bottom & then place the angle devive against that. Then it will show you exactly how many degrees you have & you can then adjust accordingly.

                Jim,
If you have a "I phone" down load the free level app if you don't already have it. You will then have a handy little inclinometer for all sorts of little jobs.
Are you having your car judged at the Arizona regional?
                Kind Regards

                  Russ,
Thanks for the reply , and yes I read it several time as well .I agree that it does not say the word bezel , and I don't like substituting words either . However the words "MTG Face " in the AIM , which by the way I would never have known what that meant until I read the words "mounting face " in the Service Manual , throws you off !

If nothing more was to be added to the ASM. , that statement could just as easily have said : adjust to 2 degrees of vertical with PNL. ASM. in full open position . But Nooooooo ! It has to complicate things for people like me ! What is the Mounting Face ?

                    Fred ,

Are you using the inside or outside edge of the buckets as your reference points and or lines ?

Oh and by the way , Is this one of those operations that should only be done when the car is fully loaded with a full tank of gas ?

Re: C-2 headlight bucket final adjustment

Well I bit the bullet and bought the Harbor Freight angle finder .(only $4 with coupon ). Using the outside edges of the buckets , even though I still maintain they are not perfectly straight , I lined up the buckets to as near to zero as possible. See photos below.

After all the searches and posts I finally came across a Tech session that went into great detail on how to rebuild headlight buckets. It was from CC.
It however just glazed over the alignment issue .This, along with the picture , is all it said about that :

The fully open position of the headlamp bucket affects headlight aiming, as a rule of thumb we align the back edge of the headlamp housing with the headlamp opening in this area. If the headlamp opening is adjusted too low or high the headlamp aiming screws will not have enough travel." Period !

Well now that I spent all this time and a lot of yours , and
having completed the task , I get it ! Their method may not be as accurate , but it comes darn close !Probably within two degrees !

                          Thanks to all,

                          Jim
